Travel Team vs. Rec League: What the Extra Money Buys
Two families, same sport, very different bills. Here's the size of the gap between travel/club play and recreational league play — and what that extra spending actually buys.

“Travel ball costs more than rec league” isn't news to any parent who's written both checks. What's less obvious is how much more, and what the gap is actually paying for.
The numbers
A 2025 survey of AAU/club sports parents found average annual AAU/club spending — fees, travel, and other costs combined — came to over $5,000 a year. Set that against the Aspen Institute's national all-sports average of $1016/year for primary-sport participation, and travel/club play is running roughly five times the broader average.
Worth being precise about what's being compared: these are two different surveys of two different populations, not the same families measured under two scenarios. The AAU/club figure is specific to families already playing at that level; the all-sports figure spans every level of play, rec included. Read the gap as directional, not a single family's exact before-and-after.
What the extra money is for
Travel and club programs typically mean more games and practices, higher-level coaching, and tournament entry fees on top of travel costs — the same categories that show up in any youth sports budget, just at a higher volume and intensity. What it isn't is a guaranteed higher probability of playing in college: no source ties club-level spending to a materially different NCAA participation rate, and none of the site's calculators claim otherwise.
A note on the source
The AAU/club figure comes from a 71-family survey that skews affluent — more than 75% of respondents were white and more than 75% reported household income over $150,000. It's not a nationally representative sample, and is presented here as a directional figure rather than a precise national average.
