The rec/typical default comes from Aspen Institute Project Play — State of Play youth sports parent surveys, the 2024 survey wave: projectplay.org. It's a national average across every participation level, not a recreational-only figure, since no source publishes one.
The travel/club default comes from Ekmekjian, Snyder & Snyder — "The Cost of AAU Youth Sports" (RAIS Conference Proceedings, 2025): rais.education (PDF), a 71-family survey of AAU/club sports parents.
Assumptions & limitations
- Neither default is a clean rec-vs-travel split. The rec default blends all participation levels; the travel default comes from a small, affluent-skewing sample (75%+ white, 75%+ household income over $150,000) that isn't nationally representative. Replace both with real numbers for an accurate comparison.
- Flat annual rate, no level-up cost growth. This tool multiplies a flat annual figure by years — it doesn't model costs rising as a child moves from house league toward travel or club play mid-way through the horizon.

Why isn't there a single 'travel is 3x rec' number?
Because no source publishes one. Neither the Aspen Institute's youth sports surveys nor any other published study breaks the same population into a clean recreational-only figure and a clean travel-only figure. Rather than invent a multiplier, this calculator starts each side from the best real average available and lets you edit both.
Where does the rec/typical default come from?
The Aspen Institute Project Play — State of Play youth sports parent surveys's 2024 survey wave — the national average annual spend on a child's primary sport, across every participation level. It's the closest published baseline for typical or recreational-level play, not a recreational-only figure, since none exists.
Where does the travel/club default come from?
A 2025 academic study (RAIS Conference Proceedings) that surveyed 71 families of AAU/club athletes directly about their spending and found an average AAU/club cost of over $5,000 a year. That survey's sample skews small and affluent, so treat the default as a real but not nationally representative starting point — the field is fully editable.
Does this account for costs rising as a child moves up levels?
No — this is a flat annual-rate comparison over however many years you enter, not a year-by-year cost curve. A family expecting to move from rec to club partway through should run the calculator twice, once per phase, or use the Family Sports Budget Calculator to plan multiple entries side by side.
