What's the Real Probability of Playing in College?

This isn't a model or a survey guess — it's a real cohort ratio the NCAA publishes every year. Here's how it's built, and what it says.

Every year, the NCAA publishes an “estimated probability of competing beyond high school” table, by sport and gender. It gets cited constantly and understood rarely. Here's exactly what it measures.

How the number is actually built

It's a ratio of two real counts, not a survey or a projection: the number of NCAA student-athletes competing in a sport this year, divided by the number of high school athletes who played that sport the year before — the NFHS High School Athletics Participation Survey supplies the denominator, the NCAA Sports Sponsorship and Participation Rates Report supplies the numerator. The result is reported both for any NCAA division and for Division I specifically.

Two numbers that cut against intuition

Women's ice hockey shows the highest any-division figure in the entire table at 32.1% — but it comes from the smallest participant pool measured, 9,589 high school players nationally. Men's basketball sits at the other end: 3.6% at any division, one of the lowest figures in the table, drawn from the largest pool of any sport listed, 540,704 high school players.

Neither number means one sport is “easier” than the other. A small participant pool with few NCAA programs can mean fewer real opportunities even at a higher percentage, and a large pool with many programs can still mean fierce competition for a spot even at a lower one. The percentage alone doesn't tell you the count of programs or roster spots behind it.

Any division vs. Division I

The table reports both figures separately because they diverge meaningfully — the Division I number is smaller than the any-division number for essentially every sport in the table, sometimes by more than half. A sport's any-division probability isn't a stand-in for its Division I probability specifically.

What this doesn't measure

This is a population base rate — the share of all high school athletes in a sport who go on to play in college — not a probability conditioned on any individual athlete's talent level, position, or region. A specific athlete's actual likelihood depends on factors this table can't capture.
